Description:

Reporting to the elected Board of Supervisors, the Public Defender directs the work of over 1,150 employees, including 700 attorneys, and provides free legal defense for those who cannot afford counsel. The Public Defender is a recognized leader and collaborative partner within the County – working with social services agencies, community-based partners, law enforcement, and others – in order to represent adults and youth as well as assist their individual clients in obtaining the best and most humane outcomes.

Our ideal candidate has had demonstrated success creating and sustaining collaborative and effective partnerships with a diverse group of stakeholders that reflect the County’s values of protecting and serving the residents of Los Angeles County, whatever their circumstances may be. The individual selected is an innovative and visionary leader, who focuses on meeting the unique needs of adult and youth populations. The candidate we seek has extensive knowledge of current trends and developments in holistic representation for adults and youth, such as restorative justice, with a specific emphasis on juvenile justice.

Qualifications:

Successful experience – a preferred minimum of 10 years – managing a large scale metropolitan legal office, and possess expertise in the management of business affairs, including budget and other administrative duties, and supervisory responsibility of attorneys handling criminal cases. The appointee must have been a practicing attorney in all courts of California for at least the year immediately preceding the date of the appointment. U.S. citizenship is required for appointment to this position.
