Description:

The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Employees’ Retirement Association are announcing a recruitment for the position of Retirement Benefits Technician. The Retirement Department is responsible for the administration of the Marin County Employees’ Retirement Association (MCERA). The membership of the Association includes employees of the County of Marin, City of San Rafael, Novato Fire Protection District, Southern Marin Fire Protection District, Marin/Sonoma Mosquito Abatement District, Tamalpais Community Service District, Local Agency Formation Commission, and the Marin City Community Service District.

The Retirement Benefits Technician plays a central customer service role by counseling members of the MCERA on a range of retirement benefit services, plan options and medical and supplemental benefits. The incumbent also performs the more difficult, complex and specialized retirement benefit calculations. In addition, this team member uses knowledge of retirement calculations, decision points and issues to serve as the primary Front Desk contact to assist members and retirees in person, by telephone or by mail/email.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate possesses experience with retirement benefits administration for a public agency and has worked with retirement administration database management systems. He/she has an aptitude for mathematics and can use spreadsheet software to perform moderately complex calculations with an eye towards detail and accuracy. Additionally, this individual possesses a strong commitment to customer service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and abilities listed in the class specification. Typically, possession of an Associate’s degree or equivalent coursework in public administration, business administration, bookkeeping, benefits administration, finance, accounting, economics, paralegal or a related field AND two years of experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, payroll, accounts payable and/or budgetary support; OR Two years of technical experience in processing retirement applications and counseling employees regarding employee retirement benefits in a public sector agency.
