The position is located in the Disability Retirement Services Division.

This position provides staff support to a team of Disability Retirement Specialists responsible for processing and investigating applications for disability retirement. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, file maintenance, assembly, security, retention, and destruction of paper and electronic records; using document management software; and tracking and ordering incomplete documents. Incumbents must be organized, analytical, and detail-oriented in order to accurately compile and verify the completeness and accuracy of a large number of time sensitive case files. Working knowledge of medical terminology, experience with confidential medical information, and the ability to communicate effectively with others are highly desirable when reviewing medical records and requesting information from physicians.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Two (2) years’ experience in a general administrative staff or specialized staff capacity analyzing and making recommendations for the solution of problems of organization, systems and procedure, program, facility planning, budget or personnel
-OR-
One (1) year’s experience as an Administrative Assistant I, LACERA or Staff Assistant I, LACERA.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS II – LIGHT physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and occasional bending, walking, stooping or squatting. Incumbents sit for extended periods of time. Work is performed in an office environment in a controlled climate.



Graduation from an accredited* college or university with an Associate Degree (AA or AS) or completion of 60 semester units of college level work, with course work in anatomy, biology, heath information management, health information technology, health informatics, human pathology, medical coding, medical terminology, or physiology.

Current and valid certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Demonstrated experience analyzing, interpreting, and abstracting information found in medical records using working knowledge of medical terminology and/or coding.

Demonstrated experience analyzing and verifying the completeness and accuracy of medical records and employment records provided in conjunction with applications for disability retirement, short or long-term disability, workers compensation, or health insurance claims.

Demonstrated experience ordering medical records from physicians and clarifying patient information for the purpose of investigating applications for disability retirement, workers compensation, short or long-term disability, or health insurance claims.

Demonstrated experience assembling, organizing, indexing, and tracking case files using document management software in a medical office, disability retirement, workers compensation, short or long-term disability, or health insurance claims department.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.
