The County of El Dorado is hiring for Chief Probation Officer
The ideal candidate for Chief Probation Officer will be a dynamic and visionary leader with a deep understanding of California’s juvenile and criminal justice systems, including the principles, practices, and implementation trends that shape probation services today. They will possess comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing probation operations, juvenile detention facilities, and treatment programs, and demonstrate the ability to interpret and apply these mandates effectively. A proven track record of managing complex budgets, implementing evidence-based practices, and leveraging technology and data to improve outcomes is essential.
This individual will be an exceptional communicator and collaborator, skilled at building consensus and fostering strong relationships with justice system partners, including the Courts, law enforcement, the District Attorney, Public Defender, Health and Human Services, and community-based organizations. The successful candidate will model integrity, fairness, and transparency, and inspire a culture of accountability, equity, and innovation within the Department. They will bring a management style that emphasizes accessibility, diplomacy, and decisiveness, while promoting diversity, inclusion, and professional development for staff. Above all, the Chief Probation Officer will play a critical leadership role in guiding countywide operations, implementing evidence-based practices, and ensuring accountability while promoting rehabilitation and positive change.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; however, education may not solely substitute for the required experience.
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public administration, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, behavior science, or a closely related field;
AND
Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in adult and/or juvenile probation (including detention) administration, of which two (2) years were at a senior management level.

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public administration, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, behavior science, or a closely related field;
AND
Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in adult and/or juvenile probation (including detention) administration, of which two (2) years were at a senior management level.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California or Nevada Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain a valid possession of appropriate Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) Management Course certified by the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a certificate of completion of section 832 of the Penal Code (Search and Seizure) within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Possession of valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Special Requirements:
This position is a peace officer under Penal Code section 830.5 and appointment is contingent upon successful background investigation, Live Scan, psychological, and medical evaluations.
