The County of Madera is seeking a confident, high energy leader, capable of operating with significant independence and initiative, yet open to direction from the Madera County Superior Court and County Administrative Officer. The Department:

The Chief Probation Officer is a Department Head position that serves at the pleasure of the Judges of the Madera Superior Court and receives day-to-day oversight from the Madera County Administrative Officer. The position is responsible for ensuring that the functions and programs of the Probation Department are performed in a manner that serves and protects Madera County.

The Department is an integral part of a complex justice system and is responsible for enforcing state and local laws, court orders, and recommending actions that have the greatest potential for positive change without risking public safety.

Employment Standards / Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, corrections, criminology, psychology, or a related behavioral or social science field.

Experience: Nine (9) years of progressively responsible professional experience in adult and youth probation work including three years of upper management and supervisory experience equivalent to a Deputy Chief or Assistant Chief.

Licenses, Certificates and Special Conditions:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance program.
  • Completion of the Probation Officer Core Course. 
  • Completion of the Manager/Administrator Core Course.
  • Completion of the PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course.
  • Successful completion of a POST-approved comprehensive background investigation is required, including a review of employment history, criminal conviction record, psychological examination, credit history, use of intoxicants and/or other controlled substances.
  • Applicants must pass a medical and psychological evaluation that includes a review of explicit and implicit bias towards race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
