Lead California’s Capital Toward a Bold and Inclusive Future
The City of Sacramento, a vibrant, diverse, and growing community of over 524,000 residents, is seeking a visionary and principled leader to serve as its next City Manager. As California’s state capital, Sacramento blends historic legacy with forward-thinking innovation—home to renowned cultural destinations, top-tier universities, and a nationally recognized farm-to-fork movement. With over 200 parks, 80 miles of trails, and award-winning public transit, Sacramento offers a dynamic lifestyle at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers.
As the City’s chief executive officer, the City Manager will lead a full-service municipal organization of more than 4,800 staff and oversee a $1.5 billion budget. Appointed by the City Council, this position is responsible for implementing policy, delivering high-quality public services, and guiding strategic initiatives that support inclusive economic growth, equity, and resilience.
The ideal candidate is a unifying and equity-focused leader with a strong record of organizational transformation, fiscal management, and results-driven innovation. They will be politically astute—yet non-political—skilled at balancing complex stakeholder interests while maintaining public trust and transparency. Proven ability to rebuild staff morale, establish high performance standards, and communicate authentically with diverse communities is essential.
Key Qualifications:
- 10+ years of progressively responsible executive experience in complex public agencies
- Deep understanding of local government operations, policy, and finance
- Track record of fostering inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing teams
- Bachelor’s degree in public/business administration or related field required; Master’s preferred
