Deputy Director of General Services
(Two Positions Available)
Sacramento County is one of California’s largest and most dynamic counties, serving 1.5 million residents across 984 square miles, including the state capital and seven incorporated cities. With more than 12,800 full-time employees and an approximately $9.0 billion FY 2026-27 budget, the County provides a broad range of municipal, health and welfare, criminal justice, infrastructure, and public service functions to residents throughout the region.
The County is seeking two accomplished and forward-looking leaders to serve as Deputy Director of General Services within the Department of General Services. DGS keeps Sacramento County operating through integrated operational services, facility asset management, capital delivery, real estate, fleet, contracting, sustainability, security, and support functions. The Department includes 480+ employees, $1.27 billion in annual resource responsibility, 5.8+ million square feet of County-owned facilities, 2+ million square feet of leased space, a 2,400-vehicle fleet, a $1.07 billion five-year capital improvement program, and approximately 1,200 annual contracts.
This is a rare opportunity to help shape the operational infrastructure of one of California’s largest counties. Deputy Directors will provide executive leadership across major operational and technical portfolios that may include Capital Delivery & Design and/or Facilities Operations & Asset Management, depending on organizational priorities and candidate experience. These roles will help modernize service delivery, strengthen long-range capital and asset planning, improve operational systems, advance sustainability and resilience, and support high-impact Countywide initiatives.
The ideal candidate will be a strategic, collaborative, and operationally credible public-sector leader who can navigate complexity, build trust across departments, and guide large service systems with professionalism, accountability, and sound judgment. Competitive candidates will bring executive-level leadership experience in complex public-sector operational, infrastructure, facilities, asset management, engineering, real estate, or capital program environments. For candidates aligned with the Capital Delivery & Design portfolio, experience leading architecture, engineering, design, construction delivery, multidisciplinary technical teams, and complex civic capital projects is highly desirable; a California Professional Engineer license is also highly desirable. Candidates aligned with Facilities Operations & Asset Management should bring experience in facilities operations, public asset management, real estate, capital planning, operational continuity, lifecycle strategy, and organizational service delivery.
Compensation: $189,068.04 – $208,445.04 annually, plus an excellent benefits package. The position is also eligible for a 3% COLA effective July 1, 2027.
