Description

Under the direction of the Health and Human Services Director, the Deputy Director plans, organizes, and manages the administrative and programmatic activities of the agency, including eligibility, protective services, public health nursing programs, health education programs, and health clinic operations. The Deputy Director also serves as Assistant Public Guardian and acts in the Director’s absence.This position provides leadership across multiple divisions, ensuring effective service delivery, policy compliance, and interdepartmental coordination to meet the needs of the Alpine County community. The Health and Human Services Department provides a broad spectrum of programs designed to protect, empower, and promote the health and safety of Alpine County residents. Services include social services, public health, behavioral health, environmental health, and community wellness initiatives. Reporting to the Health and Human Services Director, the Deputy Director plans, organizes, and manages administrative and programmatic functions across the department, including eligibility, protective services, public health nursing, and clinic operations. The Deputy Director also serves as Assistant Public Guardian and acts on behalf of the Director in their absence. This role provides leadership to a multidisciplinary team, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, oversees budgets and grant programs, and drives coordination between divisions to deliver effective and equitable services. The ideal candidate will be a confident leader with a balance of strategic vision and hands-on management experience, capable of fostering collaboration both within the department and with external partners.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Path 1: An undergraduate degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Public Health or other related field and four years of full-time supervisory experience in social services, public health or other related organization with experience in personnel, administration, and program management.

Path 2: A graduate degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Public Health or other related field and two years of full-time supervisory experience in social services, public health or other related organization with experience in personnel, administration, and program management.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: In addition to the minimum qualifications listed above, preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:

Social Services: Experience with programs supporting vulnerable populations, eligibility, or protective services.

Public Health: Familiarity with community health initiatives, prevention programs, or public health administration.

Behavioral Health: Knowledge of mental health, substance use, or integrated care programs.

Government Finance: Experience managing program budgets, fiscal oversight, or grant administration for a public/government agency.
