Kern County – Deputy County Counsel I-V

Looking for an experienced civil litigation attorney who is capable of stepping into full case load, defending public agencies and employees in matters involving allegations of negligence, dangerous condition liability, adverse employment actions, police misconduct and civil rights liability in both state and federal courts.   Must be willing to occasionally travel for trials in venued in the U.S.  Eastern District Court of California.  Good organizational, time management, and team building skills are a must.

Deputy County Counsel I/II/III/IV/V

$84,084 – $185,584 Annually

Attorneys will receive an additional 5% of their base salary for confidentiality pay and 6% of the base salary for Premium pay. This brings their pay to $93,333 – $205,998 annually.

Employees will receive a step increase in July 2026, unless they are maxed out on their salary range.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards:
Levels I/II/III/IV/V:

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Admitted, or eligible for admission, to the United States District Court for Eastern California.
  • Incumbents must have the ability to travel to remote locations within Kern County for the performance of job duties.

Level III: Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney.  One (1) year of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.  A post-doctoral degree in law may be substituted for up to one (1) year of experience as a practitioner.

Level IV: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the private or public practice of law as an attorney. Two (2) years of experience emphasizing governmental, trial practice or administrative law is preferred.  A post-doctoral degree in law may be substituted for up to one (1) year of experience as a practitioner.

A writing sample of no more than 5 pages will be requested by the hiring department at the time of interview.
