Assembly Select Committee on Child Care Costs Holds First Hearing

On Wednesday, August 20, the Assembly Select Committee on Child Care Costs held its first hearing since the Select Committee was created by Speaker Rivas in April. Co-chaired by Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry and Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen, the Committee was created to advance solutions that expand access to affordable child care as part of the Assembly’s broader effort to address California’s high cost of living.
The hearing examined the current state of California’s child care system, with testimony from parents, providers, researchers, and business leaders on issues of affordability, accessibility, and workforce sustainability. Despite recent increases in state investment, particularly in subsidized programs, only 14% of eligible children are currently served. Middle-income families who earn too much to qualify for subsidized care are often forced to make difficult decisions such as delaying parenthood, reducing work hours, or leaving the workforce altogether.
A key focus of the hearing was the economic impact of inadequate child care. Panelists emphasized how limited access to affordable care constrains labor force participation, burdens employers, and results in significant economic losses statewide.
