Launched in July 2021, Clean California is a $1.2 billion effort led by Caltrans that is helping enhance public spaces across the state and creating job opportunities. Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom shared major milestones that the program has achieved in the 4 years since it was launched, including the removal of over 3 million cubic yards of litter and debris – enough trash to fill over 136,000 garbage trucks!

However, the initiative isn’t just dedicated to picking up litter. Additional Clean California programs include free dump days, highway art installations, new parks, improvements to transit stations, and more.

To become an officially designated Clean California Community, communities including counties, must meet at least 10 of the 15 criteria, including taking a pledge. Communities with full designation status receive a variety of benefits, including priority access to grants, educational resources, and recognition on state websites, social media posts, and media outreach. The first 30 Clean California Communities have been officially designated, with another 110 having taken the pledge.
