The deadline to apply for a regulatory suspension to exempt certain critical fuels reduction projects has been extended to allow projects more time to initiate fuels reduction projects during the cold and rainy months. Now, requests for suspension may be submitted through May 1, 2026

Conducting fuels reduction projects during the winter months reduces the risk of planned burns expanding, makes it easier to manage smoke and protect public health, and allows crews to give fuels reductions projects more attention without the competing demands of California’s peak-fire season.

When applicants submit suspension requests, they attest that project work will comply with Best Management Practices and measures identified in the Statewide Fuels Reduction Environmental Protection Plan. Applicants will receive notification within 60 days of application completion if their project has been approved for regulatory suspension. Qualifying projects may be eligible to have their regulatory exception extended for up to 5 years from the start date of the project
