Sacramento, CA — Monterey County Supervisor and California State Association of Counties (CSAC) Second Vice President Luis Alejo issued the following statement on the provisions in SB 280 (released Monday) which commit the state to funding counties in advance for the “actual and reasonably necessary costs” of conducting a statewide special election on November 4, 2025:
Counties don’t have a dime to spare as we work to keep local services afloat in the face of federal and state budget cuts. So we’re thankful that the governor and state lawmakers are heeding our call to fully fund the November special election — in advance.
Background:
- CSAC, the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials and other county groups submitted a funding request letter to the governor and legislative leaders last week.
- The bill package was released Monday morning and is expected to be voted on Thursday.
- CSAC does not have a position on any other part of the redistricting package, including the constitutional amendment that would rewrite congressional district maps.
