The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) recently released CalFresh Work and Workforce Training: Navigating New Federal Requirements. The report assesses how the new federal requirements from H.R. 1 may affect CalFresh recipients by examining the experiences of working-age participants in the labor force and drawing lessons from the CalFresh Employment and Training program. In the accompanying policy brief, PPIC researchers identify three ways the state can reduce the number of Californians at risk of losing CalFresh benefits:

  • Prioritize adults ages 55–64, who are especially vulnerable to losing benefits.
  • Support job transitions to shorten gaps between periods of employment.
  • Build on existing investments in workforce development and educational opportunities.

The PPIC researchers will host a webinar on Tuesday, August 25 from 11:00 to 11:40 am to discuss their findings in the report and answer questions. Register here
