Website Accessibility Compliance Deadlines Extended for Counties
Back to News
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has pre-filed an Interim Final Rule for public inspection to extend the deadline for counties to comply with Accessibility of Web Information and Services of State and Local Government Entities. Taking effect immediately, the rule will grant counties with populations over 50,000 an extension to comply by April 26, 2027, while counties with populations below 50,000 must comply by April 26, 2028.
Website accessibility is a vital step toward fulfilling the mission of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. 794d). However, compliance with website accessibility standards is difficult for many county governments due to costs and technical challenges. This extension of the deadline provides counties with more time to make their websites and documents ADA-compliant and alleviate the threat of litigation.
The rule will be published officially on Monday, April 27, 2026, but the pre-filing is available here. The National Association of Counites (NACo) will be hosting a webinar next week to provide an overview of the rulemaking and next steps for implementation. Additional details will follow.
