I have the honor of managing one of CSAC’s most inspiring programs—the Challenge Awards. Every year, I’m reminded why it means so much.

The Challenge Awards spotlight the impactful, innovative work happening across California’s 58 counties—often behind the scenes. Counties are where public service happens every day, and these awards elevate the people and programs improving lives without seeking recognition.

What makes this program special is its integrity. Submissions go through two rounds of judging. First, county leaders—Supervisors and Executives—who know what it takes to get programs off the ground, review and score the entries. Then, Capitol Community leaders take a closer look. For many, it’s their first chance to see just how critical counties are to real, on-the-ground change.

Then there are the Innovation Awards—the best of the best. I’ve had the privilege of meeting the teams behind these standout programs and sometimes the people they’ve helped. It’s humbling to witness their passion and hear their stories.

Last year, we hosted our first-ever Challenge Awards Celebration to publicly recognize these changemakers. It was a powerful reminder of why this program matters.

To all 58 counties: I encourage you to submit your great work to the 2025 CSAC Challenge Awards. Let us help share your story and celebrate the difference you’re making.

The deadline to enter is September 12, so don’t wait! Get all your Challenge Award details here: https://www.counties.org/what-we-do/challenge-awards/
