The Brown Act ensures that public decisions are deliberated on and made at open and public meetings that allow for meaningful civic engagement. Recent legislation has expanded accessibility and modernized some of the law’s out-of-date provisions. SB 707 (Statutes of 2025, Chapter 327) advanced several significant reforms including  expanded accountability measures, updated remote participation and emergency meeting rules, and greater flexibility for members of specified advisory bodies. CSAC will continue working with local governments, stakeholders, and policymakers to identify opportunities to further modernize the Brown Act while preserving its core commitment to open and accessible government.
