Governor Newsom Releases Wildfire Report
April 18, 2019
Governor Gavin Newsom recently released a report examining California’s catastrophic wildfires, climate change and utility liability. The report outlines steps that can be taken to reduce the incidence and severity of wildfires, including the wildfire mitigation and resiliency efforts the Governor has already proposed. It renews the state’s commitment to clean energy and also outlines actions to hold the state’s utilities accountable, with options to change utility liability.
As wildfire prevention and response remains one of CSAC’s top priorities, we joined a broad coalition of wildfire victims, insurers, attorneys and other local government advocates in responding to the report via news release stating general support for the suggestions in the report and urging the Governor and Legislative leaders to keep the inverse condemnation utility liability standard.
Additionally, CSAC issued its own news release expressing general support for the Governor’s outline and reiterating support for the current legal standard under inverse condemnation.
The Governor’s report and its potential impact will be a topic of discussion during the AENR Policy Committee meeting on April 25 at 10:45 a.m. during the CSAC Legislative Conference in Sacramento.
