Marquee Single Use Plastic Waste Reduction Bills Expected to Take Amendments
September 5, 2019
AB 1080 (Gonzalez)/ SB 54 (Allen): These two measures are companion bills that would require the adoption of regulations requiring manufacturers and retailers to reduce the waste associated with single use packaging and products 75 percent by 2030. These bills would help California transition away from single use plastic containers to reusable or compostable packaging.
CSAC supports these efforts because local governments have long been responsible for ensuring that California can achieve its recycling and waste management goals and are in support of reducing waste at its source before it gets to our local landfills and recycling centers. These measures are expected to take amendments during the final weeks of session that are anticipated to remove industry opposition.
