Tree Mortality Update
June 15, 2017
The Tree Mortality Task Force met Monday to provide updates on actions taken and future work to address the ongoing crisis. In addition to the regular updates, Task Force members also heard a presentation from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy about the National Disaster Resilience Competition, a $1 billion program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to “rebuild in a more resilient way following major disaster.” California is receiving $70 million for innovative disaster recovery following the Rim Fire.
The summer season also presents many opportunities for various workshops and educational experiences:
· Cal Fire will host 11 State Responsibility Area (SRA) Fire Prevention Fee Grant Workshops throughout the state during the month of July. The free workshops will provide information about the grant process, including invoicing, CEQA, and other aspects.
· The 2017 Weed Committee Annual Tour is scheduled for July 19-20 in Tuolumne County. Discussion topics will include site prep, planting and release treatments post-fire on private and public lands, chemical test plots, insect damage, worker protection, stand density and resistance to bark beetle mortality, tree injection to treat pests, and mechanical slash treatments. · A free symposium entitled “Lessons Learned – Drought and Tree Morality in the Sierra Nevada” is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25. The event will provide a forum to share findings, results, and experiences, and to help frame future forest management. USDA California Climate Hub, the U.S. Forest Service Region 5, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, Cal Fire, the National Forest Foundation, and the California Landscape Conservation Cooperative are all involved.
