The City of Mill Valley is seeking a self-directed problem-solver
with high standards for quality and a solid commitment to public
service to fill the open position of Accounting Supervisor.
Definition
Under direction of the Finance Director, to perform a variety of
professional accounting support functions, including maintenance,
compilation, and review of city financial records, participation
in development of the City budget, preparation of financial and
statistical reports, supervision of department personnel, and
related work as required.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties
Assists the Finance Director in development, analysis, and
monitoring of the city budget document;
prepares journal entries and executes month and year-end closing
procedures; maintains general ledger, subsidiary ledgers and
fixed asset records; audits and reviews operating and project
account expenditures as well as revenues; provides support to all
operations of the Finance Department such as purchasing, accounts
payable processing, payroll preparation, employee benefits
administration, business license and other revenue collections as
needed; participates in the preparation of reports; provides
assistance to outside auditors; performs in the absence of the
Finance Director.
Supervision Received and Exercised
The Accounting Supervisor position reports directly to the
Finance Director and shall exercise functional supervision of
other department staff.
Qualifications:
Job-Related and Essential Qualifications
Knowledge of:
• Generally accepted accounting and auditing principles and
procedures.
• Internal audit control and budgetary practices.
• Local Government accounting and financial operations, highly
desirable.
• Revenue and expenditure forecasting.
• Payroll and benefits administration
• Accounts payable and receivable.
• Automated financial data systems.
• Personal computing, spreadsheets, word processing, data base
management; familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft
Office highly desirable.
Ability and skills to:
• Maintain accurate and detailed records.
• Prepare complete, accurate, and concise finance reports.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both written and orally.
• Plan, organize, and supervise work of support personnel.
• Recommend and implement new procedures where necessary.
• Delegate authority and responsibility.
• Deal effectively with other city personnel and the public.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely
provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities
would be:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an
accredited college or university with major course work in
Accounting highly desirable.
Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible
professional accounting experience. Experience with governmental
accounting is highly desirable.
