Description:

DEFINITION
Under limited direction, plans, develops, and implements complex professional planning projects on the most difficult current and/or advanced planning projects; develops recommendations on planning policy formulation and implementation; directs the work of major planning programs; prepares plans and technical reports; prepares environmental documents individually or through the use of consultants; and performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the most advanced working level in the professional Planner class series. Incumbents are expected to perform the more complex planning work, may supervise subordinate staff on specific assigned tasks, and are responsible for directing the work of major programs with a high degree of complexity. Incumbents are expected to undertake advanced and current planning projects that require considerable professional knowledge and the use of independent judgment. The ability to build effective working relationship with other County staff and internal and external customers is essential. Incumbents are expected to continually strive to identify and remove service process barriers and be a champion of providing exceptional customer service to other County staff, businesses, and residents. This class is distinguished from the Associate Planner level in that Senior Planners are expected to perform the most complex assignments, utilize a greater degree of independent judgment and problem solving capabilities, and take on an active role in identifying and resolving customer service and permit processing constraints.

Qualifications:

Five years of increasingly responsible planning experience in the public and/or private sector, including one year in a lead capacity. Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in urban, regional, or resource planning, or a related field. A master’s degree in urban, regional or resource planning may be substituted for one year of experience.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid and appropriate driver’s license.
