CAL FIRE Grants Extension of the Public Comment Period for the State Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Zones

January 26, 2023

At the request of CSAC and other partner organizations, the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the Office of the State Fire Marshal have granted an extension on the public comment period for the draft Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) map for the State Responsibility Areas.

CSAC requested an extension on the initial short 45-day public comment period that began early December and during the holiday period. CSAC and a coalition of interested parties wrote a letter to request an extension of the review period for these maps and emphasized the importance of a thorough public comment period as the updated map will have significant consequences for millions of California residents. In addition to the letter, CSAC brought this to the attention of the State Fire Marshall at the Wildfire Mitigation Advisory meeting on the 17th. On Tuesday of this week, the Fire Marshall announced that the deadline for counties to submit comments has been extended by 60 days.

The public comment period is now a total of 110 days and ends on April 4, 2022. To see the CALFIRE notice of an additional comment period, click here.

CSAC strongly encourages counties to submit their input on the FHSZ map. Members of the public can comment via CAL FIRE’s website at https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/FHSZ.
