LAO Post: State Corrections Response to COVID-19

May 15, 2020

The Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) released a budget and policy post State Corrections: Response to COVID-19. In this post, the LAO gives an update on COVID-19 staff and inmate cases within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and lays out changes that CDCR has implemented for prisons, parole and the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to reduce the exposure of COVID-19 for offenders and staff.

As CSAC has previously shared, a couple of those changes include the suspension of intake for inmates sentenced to state prison or DJJ until May 22 and the expedited release of approximately 3,500 offenders. The report also discusses the court oversight of the state’s response to COVID-19 that includes a brief explanation of the earlier Coleman v. Newsom and Plata v. Newsom court cases and how they relate to the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts of CDCR.  Full details of the post can be found here.
