New Administration, New Proposed Budget Next Week
January 3, 2019
The official transition from the Brown administration to the Newsom administration will take place next week. Governor-Elect Newsom will be sworn in on January 7 at the State Capitol with the release of the Governor’s January Budget required no later than Thursday, January 10.
While January 10 is the constitutional budget deadline, in previous years the budget has been often a day or two ahead of deadline. CSAC will provide full coverage of the Governor’s January Budget with analysis of the issues that matter most to counties in the CSAC Budget Action Bulletin, including disaster recovery, housing, behavioral health and In-Home Supportive Services.
As reported earlier this year, the State has an estimated $15 billion dollar surplus with substantial reserves in the Rainy Day Fund. The Legislative Analyst’s Office described the current economic health of the state to be unusually strong.
The January Budget could be considered somewhat of a placeholder, as it has been in prior years, with major details fleshed out in the May Revision with updated economic forecasts. The January Budget is also one of the first formal statements on priority issues after Governor Newsom assumes office.
