New COVID-19 Guidance on Gatherings

October 15, 2020

Gatherings in California are limited to no more than three households and must be held outdoors, according to new CDPH guidance released late last week.

The new gathering guidance is highly proscriptive and applies to “social situations that bring together people from different households at the same time in a single space or place.” And while local county guidance may be stricter, the state’s gathering guidance requires the following:

  • No more than three households
  • Outdoors only
  • Two hours or less
  • Masks required
  • Social distancing required
  • Discourages singing, chanting, shouting, and playing of wind instruments (e.g., clarinet, trumpet)

All other gatherings of more than three households and/or gatherings NOT included in current sector guidance are prohibited. For example, wedding receptions and large parties are still prohibited, but guidance currently allows for limited religious services or outdoor political protest activities.
