State Allows Sports with Modifications

February 25, 2021

This week, the state’s 14-day positivity rate was standing at 3.3 percent and most counties are experiencing lower positivity and case rates, too. As a result, the state relented on athletic restrictions late last week, allowing most high- and moderate-contact sports to resume with modifications in counties in the Purple or Red tier with a case rate at or below 14 cases per 100,000. The new rules also require weekly testing for football, rugby, and water polo. For more information, see the updated sports guidance here.

Thirty-three counties at or below 14 cases per 100,000 as of earlier this week include: Alameda, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Imperial, Lassen, Los Angeles, Madera , Marin, Mariposa, Modoc, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Plumas, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Trinity, Tuolumne, and Yolo.
