Road Crisis Hits Home in Riverside County

February 17, 2016 Marion Ashley

California’s roads are in crisis. The funding shortfall to stop the decline of the state’s transportation network is well documented. The state, counties and cities have identified a $14 billion annual shortfall to stop further deterioration and begin repairs to ensure our transportation system remains safe and efficient.

Now a projected loss of gasoline tax revenue due to the significant drop in gas prices and drivers using more fuel-efficient cars has dramatically reduced the primary revenue stream to maintain our freeways, streets and roads.

The People You Meet!

February 3, 2016 Gregg Fishman

One of the best things about my job as CSAC’s communications coordinator is the people I get to meet. We are in the process now of producing videos to celebrate the recipients of our 2015 Challenge Awards. These are all programs that exemplify best practices, innovation, and effective delivery of vital county services.

Invariably, the people who design and implement these programs are smart, hardworking, forward-thinking people who are committed to doing what they do better. They are heroes to the people who need the services they provide. And then once in a while, you get to meet a real hero.

Governor’s MCO Fix on the Move

January 28, 2016 Jolie Onodera

The Governor has released legislative language for his Managed Care Organization (MCO) fix proposal and hopes to have it heard in the Special Session on Health Care next week.

The MCO fix is of critical importance for county funding and other Medi-Cal services, and the Governor’s proposal will spare health plans any net costs or losses while realizing $1.3 billion for critical Medi-Cal services.

Psychological Effects of California’s Long-Term Drought

January 20, 2016 Robin K. Roberts, MFT

Imagine you are sitting on the cusp of an historic event – one that is unfolding slowly but with mighty force, and one that will last well past your lifetime. Imagine you have people in your communities who are desperately trying to tell you about these changes, and what they have to say is numbing, impossible to embrace. This is the story of climate change in 2016 – and with it, California’s long-term drought.

One Family, 58 Strong!

January 6, 2016 Richard Forster

I know a lot of you have had the chance recently to spend time with your families for the Christmas and New Year holidays. In addition to savoring the new memories my family created this holiday season, I am also thinking about the upcoming year as CSAC President and what I would like to accomplish with my County Family.

San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties Cooperate to Engage Immigrants

December 23, 2015 Melissa Kuehne

In San Mateo and Santa Clara counties more than one third of the 2.5 million residents are immigrants with nearly 50 percent of the workforce being foreign born and over 240,000 “lawful permanent residents” eligible to become U.S. citizens. Though a large, vital part of the community, immigrant groups are often underrepresented in public processes. To help address this, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are partnering with the community to support immigrant integration and have recently created offices of immigrant affairs.

Branding – It’s So Much More Than a Logo

December 15, 2015 DeDe Cordell

In October, Placer County officially unveiled its new brand and logo, an initiative designed to create a consistent, unified look of county products, services and presentations.  The entire effort was done in-house, over the course of about two years, with county staff working it in among their other projects when time allowed.

The economic development office began working with a team of county staff members in 2013 to create a logo that would represent the people and places of Placer County for economic development and tourism purposes.

Thank You, Congress, for the FAST Act

December 9, 2015 Joe Krahn Kiana Valentine

Last week, President Barack Obama signed into law a long-awaited surface transportation reauthorization bill that was approved by overwhelming margins in both the House and Senate. The legislation will provide five years of highway and transit program funding to States and local governments.  The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act represents the first time in a decade that Congress has cleared a long-term highway bill.

San Mateo County First to Win Full Beacon Award

December 3, 2015 Karalee Browne

This week San Mateo County was honored at CSAC’s Annual Conference as the first county to win the full Beacon Award! San Mateo is new to the Beacon Program this year, but its leadership in sustainability has been years in the making. In 2007, the board of supervisors adopted a resolution to support the US Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration which set the county on a path to setting goals and monitoring its success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Much to be Thankful For

November 25, 2015 Matt Cate

There is a lot to be thankful for in California Counties as we approach this holiday season. Obviously, we still have issues to deal with, problems to solve, people to care for and, as always, budgets to worry about. But we also have a lot to be grateful for as we get into the holiday and the CSAC Annual Meeting close behind. I want to take a few minutes to enumerate a few things I am especially thankful for as Executive Director of CSAC.

My Year As CSAC President

November 18, 2015 Vito Chiesa

They say that time flies when you’re having fun. It flies even faster when you are busy with fulfilling work that matters to the people of California. For me, this past year has flown by at the speed of light. With just a couple weeks left in my term as President of CSAC, I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish and a little melancholy that this chapter of my public service is coming to a close. I’ll hand over the reins in early December at CSAC’s Annual Meeting.

November 5, 2015 Bill Chiat

As the Dean of the CSAC Institute for Excellence in County Government, I am proud of the growth we’ve been able to achieve in the past year. We have begun offering classes in San Diego and Merced in the Central Valley, hosted by the counties. And we have plans to expand again next year to offer courses in Contra Costa County for people in the Bay Area.

Telling the County Story through Innovative Programs

October 27, 2015 David Liebler

Facing new challenges is nothing new for our 58 counties. It might be a natural disaster, such as a wildfire, flood or the drought; or it could be a new policy instituted by the state or federal government, such public safety realignment or the Affordable Care Act. CSAC’s annual Challenge Awards program – which recognizes the most innovative, cost-effective programs developed by our counties – regularly shows that county officials and staff are up to the task.

The State of the State’s Roads
Pictures eloquently show why more road funding is needed

October 20, 2015 John Frith

The numbers are staggering: $59 billion in deferred maintenance on state highways and $78 billion on local roads and streets. But what do those numbers mean to the average Californian who has to drive on those streets, highways, freeways and bridges every day?

To find out, the Alliance for Jobs communications staff took a Bad Roads road trip last week and visited communities in the Bay Area, Central Coast, Central Valley, San Diego and Southern California. We shot video and took pictures that document just how bad the roads are in many localities. The results in many cases are unconscionable in the world’s seventh-largest economy.

A Day in the Life: CSAC and the Last Day of Session

September 11, 2015, 10:00 a.m. in Sacramento. On this last gasp of summer, the mercury is rising to a high of about 102, the fourth day in a row of triple-digit heat. Huge Telecom Merger Proposed
Why It Matters to Counties

September 1, 2015 Betsy Hammer

High-speed internet has become so ubiquitous that many of us don’t even think about it. Is the air quality today safe for an outdoor activity? Let me check. How do I cook chicken without giving my guests food poisoning? I’ll look it up on the FDA’s website. How do I pay my bills, renew a library book, or file my taxes? Log on to that secure website and get it done quickly, easily, and from the comfort of your own home.

Roads Fix Must Put Real Dent in Repair Backlog

August 25, 2015 Matt Cate Chris McKenzie Jim Earp

This was originally published as an OpEd in the Sacramento Bee on August 25, 2015

California is home to some of the nation’s most deteriorated streets, highways and bridges, with four of the five cities with the worst road conditions in the United States and 55 percent of local bridges requiring rehabilitation or replacement. This disrepair is costing California motorists the most – nearly $762 annually per driver on average, and even more in some areas.
