California Counties Keep Healthy Eating On the Menu For Kids This Summer

Summer Meals Event at California State Capitol included sample meal with foods from all five food groups
May 22, 2019 Sara Floor

Missing out on healthy meals over the summer months can negatively impact children’s health and put them at an academic disadvantage come fall. When schools close for summer break, less than 20 percent of the California’s children who rely on free and reduced meals at school take advantage of USDA’s free Summer Food Service Program (SFSP or summer meals). While California’s counties are increasingly involved with summer meals programs, more can be done to make sure children have access to healthy food while school is out.

Once You Learn About Mendocino County, You’ll Never Look at Employee Wellness Programs the Same Way Again

Once You Learn About Mendocino County, You’ll Never Look at Employee Wellness Programs the Same Way Again
May 15, 2019 Sara Floor

Prior to joining CSAC last fall, I spent over a decade working for a nutrition education organization where I witnessed the heralded birth of our own workplace wellness program. When an organization employing a dozen registered dietitians and health advocates struggled to keep its employees engaged in wellness, I realized I was about to witness something great when I started learning more about Mendocino County’s Working on Wellness Program.

FOSTER Documentary Offers Complete Perspective

Image from HBO documentary FOSTER featuring adult woman holding young girl.
May 8, 2019 Bobby D. Cagle

Too often, when a story about child welfare receives significant press coverage, it’s usually around the tragic murder of a child due to abuse and neglect. The audience is left with an incomplete view of County child protective services, and an unfair notion of our work. This can have a ripple effect on our system beyond perpetuating negative stereotypes in the general public. Students training to be social workers may choose a job elsewhere. Judges new to the bench may fold their newspapers in dismay and view social workers through a slightly different lens.

Intensive Placer County Homeless Program Focuses on the “Whole Person”

Intensive Placer County Homeless Program Focuses on the “Whole Person”
May 1, 2019 David Liebler

Falling through the cracks – it’s a phrase we often hear when it comes to our most vulnerable populations. In Placer County, though, a concerted effort is under way to focus on chronic homeless individuals who have traditionally needed assistance from a variety of agencies and programs.  And this effort is working; county staff is helping individuals find housing, linking them to needed resources – and changing their lives.

As one of 18 counties participating in the State’s Whole Person Care Pilot Program, Placer County has developed a custom-designed program to provide intensive case management through four different service bundles:

CSAC Challenge Awards a Golden Opportunity to Spotlight Your County’s Innovative Work

April 24, 2019 David Liebler

One of the most gratifying parts of my job is traveling to counties throughout the state and learning about the innovative programs that are recipients of the annual CSAC Challenge Awards. Not only do I have an opportunity to see how the programs are making a difference at the local level, but I am able to meet the hardworking staff who have taken those innovative ideas from concept to reality.

And so I invite you to enter CSAC 2019 Challenge Awards.

Alameda County Care Partners Embrace Clients With Services
April 17, 2019 Sara Floor

After a career of helping others address substance use issues with alternative and holistic therapies, Tony Landrum found himself living with brain cancer and in need of some care himself.

“Alameda County Care Partners, especially Miss Wanda, came out to visit me and learn about my needs,” said Landrum. “Miss Wanda not only listened to me, but she really heard me.”

Yuba County’s 14Forward: What Has Made It So Successful?

Yuba County’s 14Forward: What Has Made It So Successful?
April 10, 2019 David Liebler

Yuba County’s 14Forward program for the homeless is a success story. It’s taken a lot of collaboration, creativity, patience, learning, and trust-building since it opened its doors in July 2016 – but the results are evident. The program is taking people off the streets and helping them turn their lives around.

14Forward’s tiny homes made out of modified Tuff Sheds get a lot of the publicity, but the program is much more than that. It provides wrap-around services for homeless individuals who are ready to start a new chapter.

Making Emergency Power Portable
How San Diego County Is Protecting Its Most Vulnerable Residents in a Power Outage

Making Emergency Power Portable
March 20, 2019 Whitney Alderson

On a hot Thursday afternoon in September 2011, San Diego County was plunged into darkness when a massive power outage hit the region, caused by a grid malfunction across the southwestern United States. The blackout spanned from North County to Coronado and left millions of San Diego County residents without power for over 12 hours.  Power was restored but in the aftermath, County officials learned a lot about the vulnerabilities and gaps in their emergency response plan.

Placer County Taps Into Statewide Expertise for Workshop, Trainings and Collaboration

Forum Helps Ensure Safe Drinking Water Across California
March 6, 2019 Sara Floor

Mark Twain is often credited with saying “whiskey’s for drinking and water’s for fighting.” Certainly, in drought prone-California, water is a complex and contentious issue. And according to Wesley Nicks, Placer County Environmental Health Director, nothing is more critical, more imperative than safe drinking water for California’s communities.

Sacramento County Program Helps Detained Youth Learn to Regulate Their Emotions

Sacramento County Program Helps Detained Youth Learn to Regulate Their Emotions
February 20, 2019 David Liebler

Two special rooms within the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility are having a strong, positive impact on the residents. They are called “multi-sensory de-escalation rooms,” and the County is the first juvenile detention facility in the United States to open such a program.

These de-escalation rooms provide a safe environment where the facility’s residents can calm down and regulate their feelings without use of force or being put in isolation. This is a skill that can serve them well when they are back in the community.

CSAC Staff Focus on County Advocacy in Action

February 13, 2019 Sara Floor

Reading the news, looking at maps and watching survivor interviews can only convey a fraction of the horror of escaping a California wildfire. Driving the twisty country roads and standing in the center of a valley imagining the hills on fire provides the true impact of a devastating wildfire. CSAC staff members are committed to getting out of the office and experiencing what is happening in California counties first hand. And at least once a year, we try to visit a county and learn about a policy issue as an entire staff.

Inyo County is Taking the Initiative with At-Risk Youth
February 6, 2019 David Liebler

When you sit down and talk with Inyo County’s Rehabilitation Specialists about the impact they are having on local youth, they are modest in their response. But their success is anything but modest. Formerly classified as juvenile correction counselors who worked inside Juvenile Hall, these specialists now work out in the community and are playing a pivotal role in the Inyo County Juvenile Services Redesign Initiative’s success at helping turn around the lives of youth before they end up in the adult correctional system.

A CSAC Vision For California

January 30, 2019 Lisa Bartlett

Every year brings a new set of challenges that create lasting impacts on communities. As leaders, we have the responsibility to create solutions that will resolve our current issues while effectively planning for the future. Over these last few months, California counties have come together through the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) to identify our strategic priorities for this year. I am impressed by the level of responsiveness and hard work that we’ve collectively put into crafting CSAC’s 2019 priorities.

Renewing the California Dream for a New Generation

January 16, 2019 James Gore

I was excited to attend the inauguration of our 40th governor of California, Gavin Newsom, with CSAC Executive Director Graham Knaus. I have had the chance to spend time with Governor Newsom when he served as California’s Lieutenant Governor. From disaster relief efforts to the California Economic Summit, our paths have crossed quite a bit and we have many common contacts, so it was with much anticipation that I followed his campaign.
