CSAC is spotlighting this 2019 Challenge Award program, which was in place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nearly half of all Solano County residents live in “food deserts,” areas with limited access to healthy and affordable food. About 15 percent of County resident experience food insecurity, defined as being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Acknowledging the established link between health outcomes and good nutrition, Solano County instituted a fresh produce prescription program and the We’re All Family! Mobile Food Pharmacy.

Reflecting on her experiences over several years, Bowen shares how having a trusted community partner has helped the Sonoma County region forge inroads with its non-English speaking community, and recommends tips other counties can use.

Property taxes have been in the news as of late as many of those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic worried how to meet the twice-annual deadline, the most recent being April 10.

In a departure from the norm, California’s State of the State address focused almost entirely on a single issue, homelessness. Governor Gavin Newsom spoke for 40 minutes, outlining a five-point plan for California to tackle the “disgrace” of homelessness in the state. The plan calls for “quickly and humanely” reducing street homelessness; getting the mentally ill into treatment; providing stable funding; addressing affordable housing; and enacting “real accountability and consequences.”

In 1895, representatives from 14 different California counties gathered in San Francisco to celebrate a brand new organization.

In media coverage of that first meeting, the Sacramento Union Democrat reported that the California Supervisors Association “will become actually a more important body than the Legislature. It will do more for the State than the Legislature can, for it will not make laws, of which there are too many now, but it will study how to make the State and its communities better, stronger, more economic and prosperous, and all the people more happy.”

Missing out on healthy meals over the summer months can negatively impact children’s health and put them at an academic disadvantage come fall. When schools close for summer break, less than 20 percent of the California’s children who rely on free and reduced meals at school take advantage of USDA’s free Summer Food Service Program (SFSP or summer meals). While California’s counties are increasingly involved with summer meals programs, more can be done to make sure children have access to healthy food while school is out.

On any given night, California’s sheltered and unsheltered homeless population is roughly 130,000 people. Homelessness impacts all 58 California counties—rural and urban, northern and southern, inland and coastal. The affordability and availability of housing is at alarming levels in almost every part of the state. The housing issue is not only a crisis in its own right, but is one of the main drivers of California’s homelessness emergency.

CSAC continues to advocate for increased funding for affordable housing and finding flexibility in the use of existing funds in Sacramento. Today, more than 75 representatives from 15 different counties convened in Monterey County to discus realities of addressing homelessness and housing during the CSAC Central Coast & Central Valley Regional meeting.
